ARE YOU A DEVOUT BELIEVER THAT IS SUFFERING, SICK,
OR NEEDY? THEN COUNT HOW MUCH GOD LOVES YOU!
When I step back from my failing garden, my husband's long lack of employment, our dwindling bank account, our failing health, and our lack of any kind of insurance or assurance in this life - even as I strive to remain a devoted and loving witness for Christ in this dying and sin-filled world - I have cause to remember Job. Job lived a long time ago in the land of Uz, and he was a devout man of God that too many people seem to forget. But we can learn much from Job, especially when trouble overtakes us, and well meaning friends seek to help us find the secret sins that God must be punishing us for, even when we are without reproach.
Job knew what that was like, as one well-meaning friend after another tried to correct or instruct him. The problem was that they did so without identifying the fact that God was setting Job up as an enduring example. Here was a singularly special righteous man that remained loyal to God even in the worst of circumstances. It was this man Job - even after he had lost all that he owned or loved - who fell to the ground to worship God, and said, in Job 1:21:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked shall I return there.
The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away;
Blessed be the Name of the Lord.”
So, no matter what happens, I will remember that our Sovereign Father God allows the rain to fall on the just and the unjust, and that troubles impartially visit and overtake them both. Through all of it, we need to remember that God chastises all who choose to be His children for our betterment. As the author of Hebrews said (quoting Proverbs 3:11-12 in Hebrews 12:5-6):
“My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord,
Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
6 For whom the Lord loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives.”
As this Scripture teaches, we need to remember that we are loved with an everlasting love, and - like Job - we need to pray and draw near to God through all of our troubles. As we do, we must never lose hope that our Father God Yahweh will bless us just as He eventually blessed Job, giving him back all that he had lost, and more. As we strive to remain hopeful and expectant, we must always remember that, after this life, a greater reward awaits all of us who remain faithful to God - especially if we can endure to the end, and praise Yahweh through even the most desperate times of trouble.
